Kinison

“I’m staying, Kinison, and that’s final!” Sarah shouted.

They were in their chambers in the castle of Elengil. The night was heavy and the atmosphere, both in and outside the room, was tense. The dark army had surrounded the city and the dragon could often be seen flying over the walls of the castle high above the city. Sorties had already started at different points along the walls, and Kinison knew the enemy was now probing their defenses in preparation. It would not be long before the dragon threw the full might of the dark army against the city’s defenses.

“Sarah, the enemy is at the gates,” Kinison said with a heavy sigh, pushing a travel bag into her hands. “What happened in Ethriel will happen here. This is your last chance to leave with the rest of the civilians.”

“I will not desert you, Kinison!” Sarah insisted, hurling the bag onto the bed and staring at him vehemently. “I cannot and will not run any more. We must face this threat that I brought.” Her voice then faltered and they both fell silent.

“You don’t owe anything to this city or anyone else in Alethia for that matter,” Kinison said, coming over and taking his wife by the shoulders.

“Don’t I?” Sarah responded, shrugging him off and taking a step back.

She turned and walked over to one of the windows to stare out at the scene unfolding below. Kinison walked up to stand behind her. Beyond the walls of the city, they could see thousands of dark figures moving about with torches in their hands. A sense of dread threatened to overwhelm them both as they gazed out.

“I owe this entire kingdom my life,” Sarah broke the tense silence. “In exchange for all the death and destruction I’ve brought.”

“Sarah, it wasn’t you,” Kinison consoled, but his wife spun around with eyes blazing.

“It was me, Kinison,” she spat as angry tears filled her eyes. “You know nothing of the temptation of the Dark Sword. Its control over me was not absolute, or you’d be dead right now.”

They both stared at each other as her last few words hung in the air for a moment. She turned away again and began to weep. Kinison felt helpless. He wanted to encourage and comfort her, but he did not know how.

“You started to tell me what happened to you,” Kinison said, choosing his words carefully. “Please, tell me the rest. What happened to you after you became XtaKal?”

Sarah gazed at him with a similar look she’d given him that night above the Plains of Tordin.

“And please just use your words this time,” he said, holding his hands up and taking a step back. “No memory sharing or whatever that was before.”

Sarah nodded and the hint of a smile appeared briefly on her face. Then her face grew grave and her gaze dropped to the floor.

“After I took hold of the Dark Sword, it immediately took hold of me.”

“What do you mean?”

“You remember the voice you heard, and feeling that the sword was calling to me?”

Kinison nodded.
